Redmi Details its Much-Hyped 64MP Camera Technology at China Event
Just like phone makers rushed to show off their 48MP camera smartphones earlier this year, it now seems like the 64MP is the new buzzword in town. Realme was planning to boast about being thefirst to show offits smartphone with a 64MP sensor but Redmi couldn’t help schedule an event a day early to talk about its own 64MP camera technology.
Redmi today held an event in China to detail its plans for the 64MP sensor and when it plans to launch their first smartphone with this high-megapixel sensor.
Redmi confirmed today that it’s utilizing Samsung’s 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor, which was launched alongside the 48MP ISOCELL GM1 sensor earlier in May. The GW1 sensor has large 1.6-micron pixels and a huge 1/1.7″ sensor. It can capture more light compared to old-gen sensors, capturing 16MP images using Tetracell Technology in low-light and 64MP images in brighter ones.

This 64MP Samsung sensor supports real-time HDR up to 100-decibels, Full-HD video recording at 480 fps (frames-per-second), and Super PD for high-performance phase detection auto-focus. There are ISOCELL Plus and Smart ISO technologies onboard for enhanced colour reproduction and noise reduction.
Moving past the specs, Redmi revealed that you will be able to capture pictures with a resolution as high as 9248×6936 using this sensor. This means it has 38% more pixels than the 48MP sensor found on the Redmi Note 7S. The size of a photo will be close to 19MB, which is considerably larger than the 12-14MB file size for 48MP images. It sure showed off some camera samples on stage but hasn’t uploaded them on social media.
